The Design:

Inspired by traditional Chinese art forms, the main design celebrates the Year of the Dragon through its depiction of a Wood Dragon chasing the Dragon Pearl, or Fire Ball that represents wisdom and prosperity. The snake-like form of the auspicious creature echoes the stylized waves that rise and fall beneath it, like a landscape marked by rolling hills. Auspicious cherry blossoms appear on the Dragon and in its surroundings, where the delicate flowers are connected by curved stems that create filigree patterns.

The obverse features the posthumous effigy of Queen Elizabeth II including the double dates 1952-2022 representing her 70 year reign. This is likely to be an anomaly for 2024 dated coins, as a new King Charles III effigy is expected to be introduced.

Year of the Dragon:

The sole mythical creature in the Chinese Zodiac, the indomitable Dragon is the symbol of great power and good fortune, of success and strength. People born in the Year of the Dragon are natural leaders known for their tenacity and courage, and under the auspicious influence of the Wood Dragon, 2024 brings the promise of progress, positivity and prosperity.

Those born between February 10, 2024 and January 28, 2025 will fall into the Year of the Dragon, as will those born in 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940 and 1928.
