Description
The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6, 2023, was the first coronation of a Canadian Head of State and Sovereign in over seven decades, and for many Canadians, it was their first view of a ceremony that represents continuity, tradition and duty. On the occasion of the first anniversary of the coronation, the historical event is commemorated on this colourful Special Edition Proof Dollar, which features the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III in full regalia on Coronation Day.
The Design:
The coin’s reverse features His Majesty King Charles III’s official coronation portrait taken by British photographer Hugo Burnand at Buckingham Palace following the Coronation ceremony on May 6, 2023. Surrounded by engraved maple leaves, the colour portrait shows His Majesty seated on a throne chair in full regalia; His Majesty is wearing The Imperial State Crown and The Robe of Estate, and holds the Sovereign’s Scepter with Cross and the Sovereign’s Orb. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
