A Silver Legacy
When Benjamin Franklin passed away, he left a $4,000 silver endowment to the city of Boston, accompanied by explicit instructions for its long-term investment. Per his wishes, the funds spent the first 100 years fueling small business startups through micro-loans, before transitioning into educational loans for the subsequent century. After 200 years of compound growth, the trust had multiplied so dramatically that the city utilized the remaining balance to build the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology.
