The Design:
Peter McKinnon is one of the most recognized and renowned photographers of our time. The image seen in this coin has been described by McKinnon as his “ultimate bucket shot” and is the subject of a short film viewed by more than a million people. This is Peter McKinnon’s ultimate bucket shot capturing the natural beauty of Moraine Lake.
Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometers outside the Village of Lake Louise. Its brilliant blue-green colour is a result of light refracting off the rock flour (fine particles of rock) in the glacier run-off which flows into the lake. At an elevation of 1,885 metres, the lake does not begin to melt until June. Water levels, and its vibrant colour, peak in late June.
