The reverse design by Dominion Sculptor Phillip White is a modern take on the crossed maple bough design of Canada's early circulation coins (1858-1936). The maple-themed arrangement features one leaf from each of Canada's 10 native Acer species, which are (clockwise from top right): the bigleaf maple (A. macrophyllum), striped maple (A. pensylvanicum), Manitoba maple (A. negundo), Douglas maple (A. glabrum), mountain maple (A. spicatum), sugar maple (A. saccharum), vine maple (A. circinatum), red maple (A. rubrum), black maple (A. nigrum) and silver maple (A. saccharinum). Also engraved on the reverse are the face value "100 DOLLARS", the word "CANADA", and the year "2019". The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Each leaf represents one of 10 maple species that are native to Canada, from the towering bigleaf maple to the shrub-like vine maple. Previous coins have featured one or several species, but this is the first coin to feature all 10 together in one design.

Maple leaf-themed coins are among our most popular offerings. This coin stands out from the rest thanks to its classic look, its association with Parliament's official sculptor, and its inclusion of some lesser-known Canadian maples like the black maple.
