The Design:
“Canada 150 From Coast to Coast” by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn features a collage of iconic Canadian images capturing the spirit of Canada in our milestone anniversary year. The “canvas” for this art is an immense 180 mm five kilogram pure silver coin engraved with outstanding relief and detail. This is more than 160 troy ounces. For those who prefer to think in pounds, it weighs over 11 pounds. The coin comes in a custom fitted acrylic display designed to allow for prominent exhibition.
The art includes a central image of the Canadian parliament buildings, surrounded by reflections of our nation from the soaring peaks of Western Canada to the stately lighthouses of the East Coast and the majestic wilderness of the Canadian North. Individually, each one reflects an important political, geographical or cultural aspect of Canada; together, they are the embodiment of the Canadian experience, and present the face of a nation that is beautiful, “strong and free.” The reverse is also engraved with the words “CANADA” and “150 YEARS/ANS”, while the obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, along with the coin’s date, weight, purity and denomination.
