Description
This 2016 five ounce fine silver 2016 “Big Coin” Bluenose Schooner Dime has been one of the hottest items released by the Royal Canadian Mint in the past several years, selling out within minutes of launch and very quickly appreciating in the secondary market. This coin is the third coin in the 2016 Big Coins series, and follows the 2015 series which saw coins go up in value to as much as $1,200 per coin. The first two coins in the 2016 series – the Loon and Caribou Quarter, are already selling in the secondary market for as much as $1000.
While the 2015 coins featured a selective gold plating, the 2016 Bluenose Schooner Dime features selective colour which brings our familiar Bluenose design to life in a way never seen before. The mintage remains at just 1,500 coins, making this an extremely limited issue with a very popular theme.
In addition to being spectacular looking coins, the coins in this series form the top quality coin set in Canada, and individually represent the highest quality coin for each denomination. As a pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, there is no HST or GST applicable on this item.
The Design:
While a regular ten cent coin has a diameter of 18.03 mm and a weight of just 1.75 grams in base metal, this ten cent has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 88 regular dimes. The coin is double struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective colour, highlighting the coin’s main design.
