Description

This pure silver proof quality “Lucky Loonie” one dollar coin marks the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and is meant to bring luck to the Canadian athletes.  The coin depicts a common loon spreading its wings poised to take off.  The coin also features a red painted stylized maple leaf and Canadian Olympic Team logos to celebrate and support Canada’s athletes. It is a symbolic salute to all our athletes as they prepare to soar to new heights in Rio 2016.

The Tradition of the “Lucky Loonie”:

The Lucky Loonie tradition dates back to 2002.  Just before the 2002 Winter Olympic Games began, a Canadian loon dollar was buried at centre ice of the Salt Lake City hockey arena for luck for the Canadian teams.  Both the men’s and women’s teams went on to bring home gold, and the loon dollar became a symbol of luck for Canadian achievement.  Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced special issue Lucky Loonie coins to coincide with each set of Olympic Games.
