Description

This new 2015 $5 fine silver 3-coin set by the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Cornelius Krieghoff, one of Canada's most well-known and celebrated artists of the nineteenth century. His iconic images of life among the French-Canadian habitants and First Nations peoples of Quebec helped to shape Canada's early visual identity and captured an important moment in the history of the nation.

These coins are double struck with the Royal Canadian Mint's highest quality proof finish into 99.99% pure silver, with a diameter of 36.07 mm and a metal weight of 23.17 grams (about 3/4 of an ounce) each. Mintage for this set is limited to just 7000. A beautiful red wooden box houses the highly attractive coins, making this a desirable collector's item. As a pure silver item, this set is HST/ GST exempt.

The Design:

The reverse of each of these three coins features an engraved detail from one of three famous works by Krieghoff, including Hunter in Winter, c. 1855-1865; Moccasin Seller Crossing the St. Lawrence at Quebec City, c. 1853-1863; and Indian Wigwam in Lower Canada, 1848. Each coin features the artist's signature, which has been carefully reproduced by the Royal Canadian Mint and engraved onto the reverse.
