Description
This 2015 $10 pure silver coin pays tribute to Johnny Bower, one of the most respected and admired legends of the game of hockey, both on and off the ice. The four-time Stanley Cup winning goaltender of the Toronto Maple Leafs is seen in an action pose that recreates one of his many memorable saves during his esteemed NHL career. The imagery presents Bower’s characteristic passion and rugged determination in an era when there was little protective equipment, and when Bower faced the greatest players of the original six teams. In 2017, Bower was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players of all time, and has been widely regarded after his playing career as one of the great gentlemen of the game.
The coin contains just over half an ounce of fine silver and has a limited mintage of 8,000 coins. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
This coin features a side shot of goaltender as he minds the net for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The maskless netminder’s facial features are recognizable as he turns his head to the right, always keeping his focus on the puck. Maintaining his weight on one bended knee, Bower moves to block a shot in stand-up style, his right leg stretched out while lifting his blocker and stick.
Johnny Bower:
Bower was the first goaltender to effectively employ the poke check, an aggressive move wherein the goalie uses his stick to poke the puck away from an attacking player, sometimes leaving his crease in the process. This move has since been imitated by goaltenders across all levels of hockey
