Description
This coin, made out of 99.99% pure silver (and featuring edge lettering with the words 1 OZ PURE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR" engraved in a repeating pattern around the coin's edge), esteems the calm and deliberate bison. This endangered mammal (the largest in North America) has experienced a tumultuous past, and could be considered symbolic of the relationship between early settlers and indigenous communities. This coin offers us a fine portrait of a female and male bison; the bull is slightly larger than the cow as they stand together in a grassy landscape. The mating ritual of the bison is an interesting one: male bison may linger around a female bison until allowed to mate, shadowing them and chasing away rival males. They may also shield a cow's vision so she cannot see any challenging bulls; these new potential mates must then bellow to get her attention. This proof coin uses a soft-matte finish on the couple to showcase the delicate details of the engraving against a brilliant mirror background. This multidimensional piece would be a welcome addition to any Canadian or wildlife-based collection, as would the entire 4-coin series honouring the mighty bison.
