Description

The theme of this 2013 $5 fine silver coin is “the tradition of hunting” from a Native Canadian perspective.  The coin is double struck in pure silver with intricate detail and a frosted cameo finish.  As a pure silver coin, it is also GST / HST exempt.  Pure silver weight is three quarters of an ounce.  Mintage is limited to just 10,000 coins.

The Design:

This coin was designed by First Nation's artist Darlene Gait and features a captivating scene of a young boy's inaugural hunt, his eagerness evident in his face as his camouflaged father raises a finger for silence. A buck stands in the background amid tall grasses.  The rock behind the boy features a petroglyph of a hunting scene.

The Deer:

The white-tailed deer has provided food, clothing and housing to our First Nations' people for thousands of years, a sacrifice that never went unappreciated. Words were few as guidance, for hunting skills came from example.  Understanding the spiritual connection to the earth, the animals and the rhythm of the seasons was and still is a large part of what makes a good hunter.
