Description

The tragic story of the R.M.S. Titanic is universally known. To honor the timeless legacy of the ill-fated ship, the Royal Canadian Mint released a special Titanic Collector’s Set. With only 10,000 units produced worldwide, this limited-edition collection is the ultimate treasure for history enthusiasts and memorabilia collectors alike.

At the heart of this collection are two sold-out 2012 Royal Canadian Mint coins. This includes the 25-cent colored coin, which features two striking images of the Titanic, and the 50-cent silver-plated colored coin, featuring the fated ship sailing towards the iceberg. Buyers will also own a genuine piece of maritime history: an authentic, uniquely numbered White Star Line stock certificate from the early 1900s. Complementing these artifacts is an exclusive array of postal memorabilia. The set features all five stamps from Canada Post’s Titanic 100th Anniversary issue, a specially re-created Titanic commemorative cancel, and three beautiful Titanic postcards.

The Titanic

On April 10, 1912 the White Star Line’s RMS Titanic departed Southampton, UK, on her maiden voyage, carrying 2,220 passengers and crew members. The massive luxury liner was famously reputed to be unsinkable. Tragically, she would never arrive at her destination.

Just four days into the journey, on Sunday, April 14 at 11:39 p.m., the world’s largest vessel struck an iceberg while sailing off the coast of Newfoundland. For more than two agonizing hours, the ship fought a losing battle against the ocean before finally slipping into the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Of the 2,220 souls on board that fateful night, only 700 survived.

On April 17, the White Star Line dispatched four Canadian vessels from Halifax to search for victims. While 59 bodies were recovered and returned to their grieving families, many others found their final resting place on Canadian soil. Today, 150 victims of the tragedy remain buried in Halifax, where solemn burial services were held across local churches and cathedrals, forever binding Canada to the memory of the Titanic.
