Description
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1999, this commemorative 25-cent sterling silver coin features a design from the special Millennium Series.
In April 1998 the RCM launched a nationwide design competition, inviting Canadians to create twenty-four unique quarters for each month of 1999 and 2000. While the 1999 coins reflected on Canada’s rich history, the 2000 collection turned its gaze toward the future.
January: A Country Unfolds
Designed by Peter Ka-Kin Poon and entitled "A Country Unfolds," this coin depicts the history of Canada through four scenes creatively shaped into the number 1999. The design features a totem pole, an Indigenous figure wearing a traditional headdress, a settler, and an RCMP officer. It is framed by the inscription "CANADA" and the bilingual date "JANUARY 1999 JANVIER."
