This proof sterling silver dollar commemorates the 1774 expedition of Spanish explorer Juan Josef Pérez Hernández. Leading a crew aboard the frigate Santiago, Pérez became the first non-Indigenous person to document a sighting of the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) off the coast of present-day British Columbia. The coin’s design depicts the Santiago alongside members of the Haida people navigating the coastal waters.
