Description

The year 1987 marked a milestone in Canadian numismatic history with the debut of the new circulating one-dollar coin. Released in July of that year to replace the larger, traditional nickel dollar, this transition was celebrated by the Royal Canadian Mint with a special, first-year-of-issue proof striking.

Designed by artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael, the coin’s reverse depicts the iconic common loon swimming on serene waters. Beyond its natural beauty, the loon symbolizes the friendly, welcoming spirit of Canadians.
