Description

Between 2000 and 2003 the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated Canada's 20th-century transport innovations with the Land, Sea, and Rail Transportation Coin Series. Each year featured one coin each for Land (car), Sea (ship), and Rail (train).

The third coin in the series honors the Toronto Steam Engine. This $20 special-edition sterling silver coin is designed with a holographic cameo.

Toronto Steam Engine

Finished on April 16, 1853, at Good’s Foundry, the Toronto was Canada’s first locally built steam locomotive and likely the first constructed in the British Empire outside Great Britain. Measuring 26 feet long (excluding her tender) and tipping the scales at nearly 30 tons, this formidable 4-4-0 engine marked a major milestone in early Canadian manufacturing.
