Description
Between 2000 and 2003 the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated Canada's 20th-century transport innovations with the Land, Sea, and Rail Transportation Coin Series. Each year featured one coin each for Land (car), Sea (ship), and Rail (train).
The second coin in the series honors the Bluenose. This $20 special-edition sterling silver coin is designed with a holographic cameo.
The Bluenose
Launched in 1921 at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, the Bluenose stands as arguably the most famous fishing schooner in history. Celebrated for her extraordinary speed and grace, she quickly became an enduring symbol of maritime excellence.
Though the outbreak of the Second World War brought the golden age of grand fishing schooners to a close, her journey continued; sold in 1942 to carry freight throughout the West Indies, the legendary vessel met a tragic end when she struck a Haitian reef on January 28, 1946.
