Born in Almonte, Ontario, Naismith devised the game while teaching physical education in Massachusetts. He was tasked with creating an indoor game for students to play during the harsh winter months. Blending elements of childhood games with rugby drills, he nailed a peach basket to the gymnasium balcony, grabbed an old soccer ball, and drafted the original rules. By the turn of the century, what had began as a clever indoor exercise had exploded into an international passion.
