Description

This is a complete set of Proof-like quality Canadian coins that is 47 years old, presented in a mahogany finish case. All 6 coin denominations issued in 1966 are included (Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar and the Silver Dollar)

One of the highlights of this collection is the 1966 Voyageur silver dollar. The design on the dollar coin is the same design as was on Canadas first dollar coin issued in 1935. It features an Indian and a voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company), paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind swept trees. The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights. This is the last regular issue Voyageur dollar struck in silver.

The half dollar is also a beautiful coin, featuring an intricate modified coat-of-arms design introduced in 1959. The fronts of the penny, nickel, dime and quarter are the familiar designs still used today, while the backs of all the coins bear the mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II first introduced in 1965.

The silver dollar, half dollar, quarter and dime are all struck in .800 fine silver. This was one of the last years Canadian coins were made of silver. In 1968, Canada ended the long tradition of silver coinage, replacing the silver coins with coins made of nickel.
