Description
For centuries the compass has been a near magical instrument of navigation, allowing voyages of discovery and trade and connecting the old and new worlds. So important was this tool that it was often embellished with ornate decoration, and many artistic representations of the compass have appeared on maps from centuries past through to modern times. This 2019 five ounce $50 Rose of the Winds coin captures the romance of exploration and suggests a world of possibilities in every direction. Mintage is limited to just 750 coins. GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
The design by Pandora Young comes to life with a gold enhanced high relief representation of North, South, East, and West together with the four points in between. Classic engraving completes the 32 point compass rose with the navigational directions that have led seafarers since ancient times, together with classic map art elements. From mythical creatures to the fleur-de-lis “north” mark, these images recall a time when terra incognita still appeared on nautical charts— when our sense of wonder was greater than our scientific understanding. Cresting waves and an inner ring of etched clouds frame the image, which includes a network of wind rose lines and a mythical creature in each quadrant. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The Rose of the Winds coin connects explorers past and present. To those who have set out into the world, this map feature is always set to one’s “True north,” regardless of where the winds take you. And to those who’ve grown weary from the journey, the immovable marker is your guide to finding your way home.
