Description
Scarce, popular, beautiful, and dramatically impressive for 2019 in the big five ounce 65 mm format with reverse gold plating, every coin in this series has sold out immediately from the Royal Canadian Mint since they were first introduced in 2015, with earlier coins in the Big Coin series appreciating to as much as $1,200 each. And while the 2018 Big Coins had a mintage of 1,500, the mintage for the new 2019 issue is just 1,250, significantly enhancing scarcity and collectability. The highlight of the series is this iconic Flying Loon design which will not appear on circulation issue coins. This coin sold out very quickly from the RCM and is already a coveted collectible in the secondary market.
The Design:
Features a re-creation of the iconic flying loon design first created to mark the 10th anniversary of Canada’s loon dollar in 1997. The design by Canadian artist Jean-Luc Grondin presents a striking image of a loon taking flight. Reverse gold plating fills the field while the coin’s silver surface draws the eye to the engraved relief, which includes the words “CANADA” and “DOLLAR”, and the date “2019”. The reverse gold-plated obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
This is a Big Coin with a 65 mm diameter and a weight of just over five ounces of pure silver. It is enhanced with reverse gold plating adding a warm-toned gleam that creates a rich contrast next to the silver shine of the engraved relief and makes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth stand out from the golden field.
