Few would contest the cougar’s reputation as a stealthy hunter that relies on its keen senses to survive in remote areas of western Canada. Its exceptional vision is uniquely adapted to allow the cougar to hunt its prey during any time of day. This 2018 $500 coin is 99.99% pure gold, with a diameter of 60.15 millimetres and a nominal metal weight of 156.05 grams. Mintage is limited to 99 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The reverse design by Canadian artist Emily S. Damstra features a cougar (Puma concolor) leaping toward its prey. The large paws and sharp teeth showcase the fierce attack of this large cat. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The beautiful design is given depth and texture with skilled engraving and varied finishes.
