Description
This five ounce .9999 fine silver Big Coin Voyageur Silver Dollar sold out from the Royal Canadian Mint within minutes of its official release, both as a single issue coin and as part of a seven coin subscription. Today, it is one of the most elusive of modern coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. While all Big Coins denominations are highly collectible, the most sought after and difficult to obtain today are the one dollar denominations.
The 2018 Big Coin Dollar is especially sought after, featuring the classic Voyageur design introduced on Canada’s first silver dollar in 1935. And while the 2017 Big Coin dollar had a mintage of 2,150, the mintage for the new 2018 issue is just 1,500. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
This big silver dollar is impressive with a weight of just over five ounces of pure silver and a diameter of 65 mm. The design is also a classic work of Canadian art, originally created by Emanuel Hahn to mark the 25th anniversary of the reign of King George V. The design features a Native Canadian and a Voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company) paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind swept trees. The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights. The classic art is further enhanced with a layer of rose gold creating a cameo effect on the canoe, island and the queen on the obverse of the coin.
While this design appeared on circulating dollars in Canada until the loon dollar was introduced in 1987, this is the first time ever it has been struck in pure silver in a large five ounce format, and the result is a spectacular piece of numismatic art. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt.
