Description
November 20, 2017 marks the 70th wedding anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. While this seldom reached milestone is traditionally celebrated with the gift of platinum, this one ounce fine silver $20 coin from the Royal Canadian Mint features the design of the platinum bracelet given by Prince Philip to Princess Elizabeth at the time of their marriage in 1947. Mintage is limited to just 7,500. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt. As a free bonus from Canadian Coin & Currency, a matching mint condition Canadian postage stamp is also included. The stamp features a young image of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip and dates from their 1951 Royal Visit to Canada.
The Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Derek Wicks, the reverse coin design artfully combines symbolic elements to express Canada’s well wishes to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on their 70th wedding anniversary. A colour application over detailed engraving places a special emphasis on the Royal Cypher (EP) and St. Edward’s Crown; both are flanked by decorative scrollwork that comes together in the shape of a tiara, with a prominent maple leaf to pay tribute to the Canadian Crown. The vibrant blue hue of the garter sash provides a colourful backdrop for the engraved double dates “1947” and “2017” that mark this Royal Platinum Anniversary. Fittingly, the geometric motif encircling the design is inspired by Her Majesty’s platinum-set bracelet, which was gifted to her by His Royal Highness on their wedding day (November 20, 1947). This artistic rendering of the Royal jewel is further enhanced by lustre colour technology, which evokes the scintillating beauty of diamonds and adds a regal sparkle to our numismatic celebration.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
