Description

From colourful flora to iconic fauna and landmarks, the breathtaking photographs of Canadian Geographic reflect the rich diversity of the Canadian experience. The sixth coin in the Celebrating CanadaÕs 150th 13-coin series showcases the untamed wilderness of the Northwest Territories, where natureÕs most colourful phenomenon lights up the night sky. This collaborative series between the Royal Canadian Mint and Canadian Geographic magazine features striking designs based on unforgettable photographs from the bi-monthly publication.

Based on a photograph captured by Canadian nature photographer Adam Hill, the reverse travels to the Northwest Territories where the beauty of the untamed wilderness takes centre stage. The application of vibrant colour over engraving allows for a life-like recreation of the original photograph, which captures a tranquil setting in the land of the midnight sun. Two float planes rest on the calm surface of the Mackenzie River, not far from the lights of Fort Simpson, N.W.T., seen in the distance. The northern sky steals the show in the background, where the aurora borealis light up the night with green and blue hues dancing in the sky above. The reverse also features the engraved word ÒCANADAÓ and the dates Ò1867-2017Ó to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

An affordable way to introduce others to the joy of coin collecting while fostering a widespread appreciation for the incomparable beauty of CanadaÕs landscapes!
