Description

One of the most popular sets of coins produced each year by the Royal Canadian Mint is the Specimen Set.  This collection features some of the highest quality possible coins struck for collectors, all housed in an elegant book format presentation.  All of the denominations from the five cent to the $2 coin are presented, including the low-mintage half-dollar. The highlight of the set is a unique $1 coin featuring the Tundra Swan that cannot be found in circulation or in any other coin set.

The Design:

The Tundra Swan is seen on the $1 coin in its natural setting, resplendent with features brought to life through engraving and a combination of finishes.  The beautiful bird is seen as a picture of elegance with its long slender neck and striking white plumage. While the presentation and quality of coins are excellent, this set remains affordably priced for collectors or to give as a gift. The reverse of the $1 coin in this specimen set depicts

The Tundra Swan:

The Tundra swan has an average life span of up to 20 years. Its body length ranges from 1.2m to 1.5m, with a wingspan of 1,7m, and they can weigh up to 10.5kg.  The snowy white tundra swan spends its winter’s on the water and sleep afloat. They are strong swimmers that take to the air with a running start, across the water's surface with wings beating. In flight, the flapping of the swan's wings produces a tone that once earned it the name "whistling swan." These large birds dip their heads underwater to obtain and feed on aquatic plants, shellfish, and roots. Their nests are made of large sticks lined with moss and grasses, ideally, situated close to a pond or other water source.  The female lay about four eggs and incubate them for 32 days while males guard the nest.
