Description
The second release in an exciting 3-coin series that celebrates CanadaÕs indigenous salmonid species! Found in the waters of the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans, and a wealth of rivers and lakes in between, CanadaÕs salmonid species are a powerful symbol of the wild and a valued part of our natural heritage. This fine silver coin celebrates the hard-fighting Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), which boasts the most northerly distribution of all freshwater fish in the world.
The reverse design by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater features the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) towards the end of its migratory journey, from the saline waters along the Arctic coastline to the freshwater rivers and lakes of Northern Canada. The engraved background offers an underwater view of this distinctive species as two Arctic char hover just beneath the waterÕs surface, while a third in the foreground remains close to the pebble and gravel-lined riverbed. Selective colour brings to life the spotted, bright orange tint of this spawning adult, while intricate engraving offers a detailed view of its fins and upwardly protruding lower jaw.
Selective colour and captivating finishes enhance this dynamic engraved portrait of the Arctic char, while offering a novel underwater perspective of its movement in the waters of Northern Canada.
