Description
This 2016 $20 fine silver coin is the second in a series that brings to life some of Canada’s most popular and recognized fish species. The coin is double struck with vibrant full colour and a proof finish, and contains just over one ounce of fine silver. This is also a large profile coin with a 40 mm diameter. As a pure silver coin issued from the Royal Canadian mint, it is GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
The design by Canadian Artist Curtis Atwater features the Arctic Char. An underwater view is captured, as two Arctic Char hover just below the water’s surface, while a third in the foreground remains close to the pebble riverbed. The spotted bright orange tint of the spawning adult is brought to life using selective colour. Engraving techniques allow fine detail of its fins and lower jaw. It is engraved with the words “CANADA,” the year “2016”, and the face value of “20 DOLLARS”.
The Arctic Char:
The Arctic Char is part of the Salmonid family. These fish are seen as a powerful symbol of the wild and a valued part of our natural heritage. They are found in the waters of the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans, as well as many rivers and streams. Their strength, resilience and adaptability allow it to complete an upstream migration.
