Description
This 2015 Big Coin ten cent is part of the first year of issue for one of the most popular and sought after coin series ever issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. For the first time ever, Canada’s dime has grown to a huge diameter of 65 mm with a weight of just over five ounces of pure silver. It is also beautifully enhanced with a selective overlay of 24 karat gold. This is Canada’s premier ten cent coin for 2015, yet has a mintage of just 1,500.
This coin and all other denominations in the series sold out within minutes of release from the RCM, and the coins in this series are now selling in the secondary market for as much as $1,200 on the rare occasion that they are available. As a pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, there is no HST or GST applicable on this item.
The Design:
While a regular ten cent coin has a diameter of 18.03 mm and a weight of just 1.75 grams in base metal, this ten cent has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 88 regular dimes. The coin is double struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective 24 karat gold plating on both sides, highlighting the coin’s main design and the effigy of the queen.
