Description
This pure silver $10 coin features a full colour Pigmy Snaketail dragonfly set against a holographic background. The polished silver border around the image is engraved with the word “CANADA,” the date “2015” and the face value of “10 DOLLARS.” Mintage of this coin is limited to just 10,000 coins. As a pure silver coin, this item is GST/HST exempt.
The Design:
This coin features the Pigmy Snaketail, designed by Canadian artist Celia Godkin. The dragonfly faces the viewer and seemingly peers out from the image with its large eyes; its beautiful green colouring extends from its head through its thorax towards its dorsal abdomen, where the green is replaced with yellow markings along the side. The dragonfly's veined wings are fully extended as it basks in the rays of the sun amidst the leaves and flowers of the pickerelweed. In the background, a shimmering full-colour hologram recreates the pygmy snaketail's natural habitat, adding movement to the design.
Pigmy Snaketail:
This rare dragonfly species spends much of its adult life in the forests, not far from the water where it lived for two years as a larva. As a flying adult, it will typically live just 6 to 8 weeks, as most become prey to birds, wasps and larger dragonflies.
