Description
This huge low mintage 2015 pure silver loon dollar sold out from the Royal Canadian Mint within minutes of its release in September 2014, and can be extremely hard to find today. For the first time since 1971, the highest quality regular design coins of each denomination issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for 2015 have undergone a major transformation and upgrade, and the result is dramatic. The six different coins in the Big Coins series will together now form the top quality coin set in Canada, and individually represent the highest quality coin for each denomination. This Big Coin Loon Dollar is the first Big Coin released by the Royal Canadian Mint. The mintage of this coin and others in the Big Coins series is extremely low, with only 1,500 coins of each design being produced. As a pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, there is no HST or GST applicable on this item.
The Design:
While a regular loon dollar has a diameter of 26.5 mm and a weight of just 7 grams in base metal, this huge Loon Dollar has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in Pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 22 regular loon coins. The coin is double struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective 24 karat gold plating on both sides, highlighting the coin’s main design and the effigy of the queen.
