The Design:
The reverse of this substantial coin boasts a simple-yet-compelling image of a sugar maple leaf by Canadian artist Lily Coulombe; the proof finish highlights the delicate veins of the foliage while selective matte polishing accents the three-dimensional quality of the engraving. The maple leaf has long been an iconic emblem of our country, signifying Canadian-ness beyond a shadow of a doubt to international eyes. Sugar Maple Trees (Acer Saccharum) are indigenous to the hardwood forests of northeastern North America, from Southern Ontario and Quebec all the way to Nova Scotia. It is particularly outstanding for its dazzling fall colours and for being the primary source of another Canadian staple: maple syrup.
