The Design:
The design depicts an imposing Viking ship coming ashore on the rocky coast of Vinland ("the land of wine", the name given by the Vikings to the lush, abundant land far across the Atlantic). The bold captain points the way as he directs his oarsmen seated behind a row of shields. This striking coin contains two-thirds of an ounce of fine silver and uses the Royal Canadian Mint’s highest quality matte-proof finish.
Vikings:
The history of early Viking exploration in North America unravels more and more with the advancements of modern archeological technology, spinning a thrilling tale of their journey across modern-day Canada. The Norse are believed to be the first Europeans to arrive in North America. During the late 8th to late 11th centuries Norse seafarers traveled from their Scandinavian homelands trading and raiding the shoreline towns and settlements across wide areas of northern and central Europe, as well as European Russia. These voyages also took Vikings to the shores of what is now the Canadian Maritimes.
