Description

This 2014 pure silver proof quality “Lucky Loonie” one dollar coin marks the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, and is meant to bring luck to the Canadian athletes. Mintage 15,000. As a pure silver coin, this item is GST/HST exempt.

The Design:

The coin depicts a common loon spreading its wings in a territorial display, one of the species’ most elegant and recognizable poses. The coin also features a red painted Canadian Olympic Team logo to celebrate and support Canada’s athletes.

The Lucky Loonie:

The Lucky Loonie tradition dates back to 2002.  Just before the 2002 Winter Olympic Games began, a Canadian loon dollar was buried at centre ice of the Salt Lake City hockey arena for luck for the Canadian teams.  Both the men’s and women’s teams went on to bring home gold, and the loon dollar became a symbol of luck for Canadian achievement.  Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced special issue Lucky Loonie coins to coincide with each set of Olympic Games.
