The Design:
The image on this coin was by renowned Inuit artist Tim Pitsiulak. Three kayaks and a whaling boat wrap around the rim of the coin. Two beluga whales swim alongside a bowhead whale. Dorset ivory masks adorn the bowhead’s lower jaw and its back, to honour the Tuniit people who first crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia. A Thule ivory comb lies across the top of the whale’s head representing the Inuit expansion across Canada. Mimicking the walls of an igloo is the pattern on the whale’s side, and the amauti design on the whale’s tail symbolizes the clothing worn by Inuit women.
