The Design:

In view in the background are the docks and buildings of early 19th-century Halifax Harbour. A gold-plated cameo in the top right corner of the coin is of the original figurehead from the Shannon’s bow. It is embossed with the text "1812-2012" and "HMS Shannon”.

HMS Shannon:

20 nautical miles east Boston a battle erupted between Britain’s HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake on June 1, 1813. With provisions and moral low, her highly trained, skilled and experienced crew successfully defended against a heavier manned opponent. It was a bloody 15 minute battle that won a critical victory for Britain.
