Banff National Park:
The story of Canada’s first national park began with the transcontinental railway and three of its workerswho stumbled upon hot springs at the foot of Sulphur Mountain inAlberta’s Bow Valley.
Their finding inspired a plan to protect the area as a park and tourist destination “for all people” and in1885, a 26 sq km (10 sq mi) area around the hot springs was officially designated as Banff Hot Springs Reserve. Two years later, the reserve was enlarged and renamed Rocky Mountains Park of Canada until its current name was officially adopted in 1930.
Today, Banff National Park incorporates 6,641 sq km (2,564 sq mi) of spectacular mountains, valleys, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers that welcome 8 million visitors a year—adventurers who come from around the world to experience the power and beauty of Canada’s majestic backcountry.
