Description
In 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint and the NHL marked the 50th anniversary of the introduction and first use of the goalie mask by Montreal Canadien Jacques Plante with a series of six different $20 sterling silver proof coins. This coin features an Ottawa Senators design goalie mask painted with the team's logo and colours. The coin is encapsulated and presented with a clear lucite display stand, with a black base that replicates an NHL hockey puck. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
Landmark Moment:
On November 1st 1959, goaltender Jacques Plante, in goal for the Montreal Canadiens, was struck in the face with a blistering backhand shot. After a 21-minute delay, over 200 stitches and swollen face, Plante returned to the game wearing a mask much to the chagrin of Canadiens coach Toe Blake. The goalie mask soon became part of goaltenders equipment. Jacques Plante was instrumental in the development of the goalie mask.
