Description

In 1997, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated the 10th birthday of the "Loonie" by releasing a special sterling silver proof dollar. Dubbed the "Flying Loon," this limited-edition design was also featured in the year's "Oh Canada!" and Specimen sets. Mintage 24,995.

The Design
Unlike traditional depictions of the loon resting on quiet northern lakes, this coin features a rare look at the bird on the wing. Artist Jean-Luc Grondin masterfully portrays the loon at the intense moment of takeoff, beating its wings and surging out of the water with striking power. The coin’s obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
