Thirty years ago, some Peregrine Falcon populations have declined to near extinction due to contamination by pesticides. These poisons affected its reproductive capabilities and caused an alarming decrease in their numbers. Since the 1970s, organizations such as the Canadian Wildlife Service have been committed to augment the endangered population by breeding the birds in captivity and setting them free. To date, efforts to save Peregrine Falcons have been noticeably successful.

The Design:
The designs on the reverse of the coins by Canadian Wildlife artist Dwayne Harty, depict the Peregrine Falcon in four different scenes: a mother Peregrine Falcon tending her young; a majestic falcon perched on a branch; the fastest bird in the world, diving through the air towards its prey: and the stately profile of the Peregrine Falcon. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pedrey-Hunt.

The coins bear a face value of $300, $150, $75, and $30 respectively, with weights of one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce. GST/HST exempt.
