Description
The Standard Bank of Canada started its life as the St. Lawrence Bank, which received its royal charter in 1872. The St. Lawrence Bank took on bad risks during the Panic of 1873, and new management was brought in 1876, who changed the bank's name to Standard Bank to give it a fresh start. The newly elected president was the Honourable Thomas N. Gibbs, who had served as minister of Inland Revenue in the Macdonald Government. This proved to be a wise decision, as the bank survived--and even grew--through the economic depression of the 1890s that saw the demise of several other banks. The Standard Bank merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1928.
With only 41 notes on the CPMS registry, this 1924 Standard Bank $10 is rarely seen and offered.
