Description
Struck with exceptional detail and elegant style in just over five ounces of fine silver, Canada’s 2024 Peace themed $50 coin features an intricately engraved female personification of Peace selectively plated with a layer of fine gold. The Latin inscription “Pax” denotes the Roman goddess of peace, and serves as a reminder of Canada’s past, present, and future commitment to seeking peace, stability, and a more secure international order.
The Design:
The coin features Ultra High Relief with an elegant maple leaf background design. Mintage is limited to only 71,650 coins. GST/HST exempt.
The coin celebrates Canada's dedication to making the world a more peaceful place. Lady Peace is seen crowned with maple leaves. Her visage is accompanied by “PAX 2024” and the Canadian national motto: “A MARI USQUE AD MARE” - From Sea to Sea. The obverse design features the posthumous effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
International recognition of Canada’s efforts to build a more peaceful world dates back to 1957 when Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize. Then Canadian Secretary of state for External Affairs, Pearson helped diffuse the Suez Crisis by creating the world’s first, large-scale United Nations peacekeeping force.
Over the next 40 years, Canada's contribution in UN peacekeeping became an integral part of the country's international role. In 1988, the UN received the Nobel Peace Prize for decades of peacekeeping activities. By then, Canada had contributed close to 80,000 peacekeepers.
