Description
This 2023 $50 five ounce fine silver Maple Leaf coin brilliantly combines art and technology to create a dynamic and impressive new take on one of the Royal Canadian Mint’s most classic designs. Marking the 35th anniversary of the Canadian maple leaf coin first issued in 1988, this new take boasts an extraordinary relief height of 3 mm, resulting in a fully dimensional rendering of the iconic maple leaf. Mintage is limited to just 1,750 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The relief was sculpted by retired Senior Engraver Susan Taylor, who previously worked under the tutelage of the late Walter Ott, creator of this now world-famous leaf design.
The iconic maple leaf is backed by a unique laser-engraved field pattern that celebrates the SML’s 35th anniversary in 2023. Seven small maple leaves appear with the number “35” to form a pattern that repeats five times, for a total of 35 mini SMLs in each ring—one mini SML for each year since Canada’s first silver bullion coin was issued in 1988. The pattern repeats on the obverse, which features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls
symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
