Description
Celebrate spring and nature’s re-birth with this luminous 2023 $250 gold pysanka coin. An exquisite artistic accomplishment, the egg-shaped coin is superbly crafted in nearly two ounces of fine gold that casts a rich, sun-like glow over the intricate engraving. This year, the classic symbol of renewal will have extra meaning, as the Royal Canadian Mint is donating the net proceeds to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Mintage is extremely limited to only 275 pieces. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
Gold, like the sunflower, is associated with the sun, eternity, and the powers of life, which makes it especially fitting to be the focal point of the gold pysanka coin. Designed by Canadian artist Dave Melnychuk, a festive motif of sunflowers and other solar symbols celebrate the sun’s return. Each sunflower’s petals are arranged in a pattern similar to the traditional eight-pointed star that symbolizes wholeness and luminosity. They are encircled by vines associated with wisdom and the vine of life, and whose spiralling form mirrors the cyclical and eternal aspects of life and time. These combined motifs form one of the most common symbols for the sun, a circle with a dot in the centre, which is also an alchemical symbol for gold.
Posthumous Queen Elizabeth II Effigy:
The obverse features a posthumous effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II together with a double date showing her reign 1952-2022.
