Description

This two-coin set from the Royal Canadian Mint transports us back in time to explore the coinage of Canada long before confederation and even before the era of British North America. It includes a large 2022 $50 five ounce fine silver replica of a 1711 30 denier coin together with a (much smaller) original 1711 coin of the same design. The two coins are presented side by side in a black presentation case, with the original historic coin encapsulated by a third-party authentication service. Mintage is limited to just 1,250.

The Design:

The design on the $50 fine silver coin is a replica of the obverse of the 30 deniers coin, featuring the monogram of the long-reigning King Louis XIV. The design includes two "L's, one forwards and one backwards under the King's crown, together with three Fleur-de-lis symbols.

Did You Know?

During the French regime from about 1600 to 1760, both French Imperial coins and coins intended just for the colonies were shipped to Canada by the King and imported by merchants. One of the most famous of these coins that circulated widely in Canada was the "Mousquetaire” issue of 1709-1713, named as such because of the cross on the reverse which resembled the crosses on the cloaks of the legendary musketeers. These coins were made of a debased silver often referred to as billon.
