Description
This 2022 Remembrance Day coin looks back on the legacy of Remembrance in Canada, represented by a symbol of sacrifice that dates back to the First World War and endures today. Mintage is limited to 8,500 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The design presents a touching scene highlighting the emotional impact of war. The weary officer and the crosses honouring the fallen remind us that a soldier’s sacrifice should never be forgotten.
From the great victories and tragic losses of the First World War came our most enduring symbol of service and sacrifice: the red poppy, which is colourfully highlighted on this 2022 Remembrance Day coin. Blooming in the foreground and in the fields of the fallen behind the weary officer, the poppy is a lasting reminder of those who fought and sacrificed everything; of the courage of those who serve; of the consequences of war, and a commitment to peace—lest we forget. Selective colour highlights the poppies that represent hope and eternal life through Remembrance.
Did You Know?
The poppy has been Canada’s Flower of Remembrance since 1921. During the First World War, bombardments disrupted the soil in Flanders and created favourable conditions for Papaver rhoeas to appear on the battlefields, as described in the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae of Guelph, Ont. The poem was written in 1915 and later inspired the international campaign to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance.
