Description
Canada’s 2022 $2 commemorative coin marks the 50th anniversary of the hockey series that ignited passions and culminated in one of the most celebrated moments in Canadian history. The intensity and excitement of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.) still lives on for those old enough to remember and for the next generation who have built on the skills, confidence and pride of some of Canada’s legendary players. Mintage is limited to just 15,000 rolls.
The Design:
The red and white centre design by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel features two hockey players representing Team Canada in the 1972 Canada-U.S.S.R. Summit Series. Set against the team jersey’s iconic maple leaf, the hockey players are accompanied by the words “THE SERIES LA SÉRIE” and “50 YEARS ANS”. The coaches’ initials and the players’ jersey numbers surround the inner portion to represent the spirit of Team Canada. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The Summit Series:
The Summit Series was not only significant as a sports triumph for Canada, but also as an impetus to re-unite the country. Following the FLQ crisis and a strong separatist movement in Quebec, the 1972 Summit Series provided an opportunity for both English and French Canadians to cheer on the same side and to share national pride in the historic triumph.
