While its precise origins are often debated, the modern game of golf is widely agreed to have begun along Scotland’s eastern coast near Edinburgh. In its earliest form, the sport was a simple pastime of hitting pebbles over sand dunes with curved sticks. Its status changed forever in the 16th century when King James IV of Scotland took up the game; this royal endorsement transformed golf from a rugged coastal hobby into an official, organized sport that closely resembles the game we play today.
