Description

Canada has a long tradition of making major contributions to science and medicine, with the 1921 discovery of Insulin by Frederick Banting and his assistant Charles Best being one of the most impactful for millions of people around the world. This 2021 seven coin set includes high quality numismatic uncirculated examples of all the denominations in circulation from the 5 cent coin to $2.

The highlight of the set is two different versions of the $2 commemorative discovery of insulin coin, one using classic engraving and the other including a blue colour element. The coins are presented in an attractive full colour presentation folder including information about the coins. The commemorative coins features a large maple leaf proudly identifying the discovery of insulin as a Canadian medical breakthrough and a towering scientific achievement. The story on the inner core moves from the laboratory to the isolation of insulin, while the depiction of insulin regulating blood glucose levels extends onto the outer ring.

The Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Jesse Koreck, the reverse is double dated (“1921 2021”) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a Canadian medical innovation. The discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto is represented by a maple leaf and traditional symbols: an early insulin vial, an Erlenmeyer flask, a mortar and pestle. The inner core shows insulin in monomeric form, which is highlighted in blue on selectively coloured coins, while the depiction of the hormone at work in the bloodstream extends onto the outer ring. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
