When the Dominion Police (formed in 1868) and the Royal Northwest Mounted Police (established as the Northwest Mounted Police in 1873) combined in 1920, it set the stage for the evolution of the modern Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Today the RCMP serves as a highly respected national police force while maintaining the romantic legacy of its frontier past. Dressed in an iconic red uniform and Stetson hat, the Mountie on horseback remains one of the most famous faces of Canada in the eyes of the world. The coin has a weight of just over one quarter ounce of fine silver. Mintage 100,000. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The classic engraved image features an RCMP office on horseback encircled by the word “CANADA”, two maple leaves, the 2020 date and denomination. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Its origins can be traced back to the early days of the North West Mounted Police, when members would entertain themselves in-between drills by competing and performing tricks.
In 1919, legislation was passed to merge the Dominion Police (a small federal force created in 1868) and the Royal North West Mounted Police (a frontier force created in 1873). On February 1, 1920, Canada’s newly merged police force was named the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
